Bernie Rede

Head Coach

Bernie Rede is recognized throughout the gymnastics community as one of the top coaches in the country.  With over ten years coaching experience he is truly a master of the sport.  Bernie has coached in Texas for Bella Karolyi, put Lake Havasu on the gymnastics map, made Woodward gymnastics Camp-West thrive as their head coach, and astonished the optional gymnasts at Gold Medal Gymnastics.  His strength, agility, and keen eye contribute to his most noted trait - his amazing spotting ability! Here at Flagstaff Gymnastics he designed a developmental program for young gymnasts that saftely progresses them through the gymnastic levels at an accelerated rate.  We implement this program in our invitational teams known as Tumblebugs, Hot Shots, All Stars and Pre-Team.  He also put into place the Star Program for all sudents to achieve success in the sport of gymnastics.  We are honored to have him on our team.

I started gymnastics at the age of two in Phoenix and continued training here at Flagstaff Gymnastics Center through Level 8. I am a two time Arizona State Gymnastic Champion; first taking the overall title for Level 5 in all age divisions and then Level 6 for my own age division. I have always loved to spend my summers traveling and have trained at Bela Karolyi’s Gymnastic Camp, PGA’s Camp in Prescott, Extreme’s Mingus Mountain Camp, and Santa Barbara’s Jr. Olympic Camp. While training for gymnastics, I also pursued my love for dance with the Royal Academy of Dance and the Tempe Dance Academy. Through Dance Masters of Arizona I was awarded in the teen division 1st Place Tap, 2nd Place Jazz, and 2nd Place Ballet for the State of Arizona. I have danced with the Boston Ballet, the American Ballet Theater, the Malibu Ballet, and the RAD Ballet in Long Beach. In 2005 I was awarded the title of Arizona State Cinderella Teen. Recently, I was one of three in the nation to take the RAD’s prestigious Solo Seal Examination. With all of my accomplishment and training, my greatest love is coaching. It is an honor and a privilege to coach your children.

I started gymnastics when I was three years old.  I have competed at the compulsory level (levels 5 – 7) and the optional level (levels 8 – 10).  I competed at the Level 9 Western Championships in 1998 and the Junior Olympic national Championships in 1999, 2000, and 2001.  I placed fourth on vault, 10th on bars, and finished 8th all-around in 2001.  I received a full athletic scholarship to Oregon State University where I competed for four years.  At Oregon State I was able to compete against top level gymnasts including Olympians Kristin Maloney and Jamie Dantzscher and in front of crowds of 10,000. What I love most about gymnastics is the challenges that come with learning new skills and performing the routines you have worked so hard to perfect in the gym.  My favorite events are vault and beam and my favorite gymnast is Lilia Podkopayeva.

I was drawn into the gymnastics world at the age of twelve. I used gymnastics to benefit my flexibility for other sports throughout my youth. I’ve trained all over the world at different gyms.  I started coaching classes at the age of sixteen while I still continued my training at the same gym I was attending.  I’ve been coaching here at Flagstaff Gymnastics Center since 2005.  I am currently coaching Boys’ classes Level 1 through Team.

I am a freshman at Northern Arizona University majoring in Internal Affairs with a minor in Military Leadership and German.  I am currently enrolled in Army ROTC; I plan to become a military officer and from there go into Special Forces and become a Green Beret.  I initially gained interest in gymnastics while watching the 1996 Olympics.  I started gymnastics when I was six years old, and continued with the sport until I was 18.  At age nine I began competing for the Arizona Flairs; and competed at Level 10 for the last four years of my gymnastics career. I was a part of the Arizona State Team Champions from 2003–2008.   I achieved State champion on Parallel bars 2006 & 2007, and State Champion in 2007.  In 2008, I placed second on Floor and Parallel Bars and third on Pommel horse.  In 2007 & 2008, I placed in the top 20th at an international meet with over 100 gymnasts.  I also competed in the Junior Olympics in 2006 & 2007 and placed in the top 100 boys in level 10.   I started coaching two years ago at Pommel Horse Ranch Camp.  I have been coaching boys Level 1-3 for about a year.  I enjoy the sport of gymnastics and am always eager to share my knowledge of the sport with fellow gymnasts.

I am currently a junior at Northern Arizona University and have been coaching at Flagstaff Gymnastics for a year.  I began gymnastics at the age of three and began competing at eight.  I competed in gymnastics for five years before starting competitive cheer. I started All-Star Competitive Cheer in 7th Grade at Xtreme Gymnastics and continued with competitive cheer through High School.  My senior year of High School I was captain as well as MVP while competing with Desert Storm Elite on the Senior Level 5 Elite Team.  While competing with Desert Storm we received numerous national titles as well as Grand Champions and received three bids to attend the Cheerleading World Championships. My freshman year college I cheered and competed for NAU and was chosen to compete for the National Team.  This past year I returned to compete for the Desert Storm College Team.  I have seventeen years experience in both gymnastics and cheerleading combined and I am looking forward to being a part of both the All-Star Competitive Cheer Team as well as continue coaching gymnastics.

I started gymnastics at age 8 and continued until the middle of my senior year in high school. I competed up to Level 9 on the Arizona Illusion team. I was the Level 7 State Beam champion. I competed at Regionals in Level 8. I have coached girls’ recreational classes for almost 4 years at USA Youth Fitness Center. I am currently a sophomore at NAU, majoring in exercise science with hopes of getting into Physical Therapy.  Still in love with the sport of gymnastics, I am excited to be a new member of the Flagstaff Gymnastics coaching staff for this fall semester!

Antonia Rucker

I have been involved in Gymnastics, Figure Skating, and Dance since I could walk.  I competed in Figure Skating for 12 years and have been coaching for 7 years.  I also did Gymnastics up through Level 4 until I was 8 years old after which I continued with Figure Skating and Dance…Which I am still doing now. I am so thankful for all the opportunities I have had in my athletic career and hope to share my knowledge with my students and gain some from them.  I believe a positive attitude, patience, and a lot of sparkles are the key to the athlete’s success!
